Introduction

Alex Christie practising homeopath and allergy consultant

Thank you for recently subscribing to my newsletter, my name is Alex Christie and I am a practicing homeopath and allergy consultant. I run busy practices in north, central and south west London. Many of my clients have not tried homeopathy before and do not know the wonderful therapeutic advantages of homeopathic remedies and vitamin and mineral supplementation.

These newsletters aim to share some of these pearls of wisdom to make our lives safer, healthier, and happier. So many times it is possible to avoid becoming sick by taking appropriate natural medication or supplementation at the right time. And just knowing what to take when you, your spouse or your child becomes sick (at midnight usually) can really help avoid worry and stress.

If there is any subject you would like me to cover please e-mail me and I will try and do so in my next newsletters.

Although these newsletters have been delayed in starting, for which I offer my apologies, I will be writing one each month from now onwards.

Avoiding Coughs, Colds and Influenza in the Winter Season

During the changeover from warm to cold and cold to warm temperatures, i.e. in autumn and in spring, is when we are most likely to come down with coughs, colds or flu. Ideally, book in to see your homeopath at these times and make sure you take your children with you before the start of term! Our bodies are weakened by the temperature changes and our immune systems cannot always fight off the bacteria and viruses at this time. There are steps you can take, however, to strengthen yourself both during the seasonal changes, and when you feel you are under-the-weather and likely to be coming down with either a cold or flu.

I recommend taking 1000mg of Vitamin C daily throughout the winter months, starting in autumn. Buy a good quality one with Bioflavonoids such as the Magnesium Ascorbate & Bilberry by Biocare.
I do not recommend slow release pills, as these are harder to digest.

If you feel you are coming down with a cold or flu increase this to 4000mg - 5000mg daily until you are feeling better. Let me just say, since the pharmaceutical companies have been putting out a lot of bad press about how dangerous vitamins are for you, that you will know if you are taking too much vitamin C because you will start to have diarrhoea.

If your stools are still firm and soft, you are not taking too much! Your body eliminates any excess vitamin C in any case, so there is no toxic build-up as with iron supplements, excesses of which are stored in the liver and can cause damage.

I also recommend you take garlic capsules, anything from 500mg - 1000mg strength three times a day if you feel you are coming down with something, and take Echinacea tincture, as recommended by the manufacturer on your herbal bottle. Echinacea is best taken two weeks on, and then having a break of two weeks if you are going to take this herb throughout winter.

Echinacea is an immune system booster and works well with Vitamin C and garlic. Napiers Herbal Healthcare and Culpeppers do their own special herbal combination for those times when you are at risk of succumbing to a cold or flu, called Echinacea and Elderflower compound, containing also garlic, astragalus, sage and thyme. This herbal compound is excellent if you feel you are going under with something. I recommend 1 teaspoon three times a day, after food.

Fevers, Cold and Flu Symptoms

Homeopathy can offer much in the way of treatment for colds and flu. If you feel exhausted, your eyelids are heavy and just want to close, you are aching all over and just want to go to bed. You may also be shivering inside but cold to touch, then Gelsemium is the remedy to take. I suggest 200C if you can get this, otherwise 30c, taken hourly for 6 doses. You can also put a tablet in a glass of water so that every time you sip the water (always a great thing to get into you to flush out the toxins - so drink as much purified water (not tap water!) as you can manage, ideally 2 litres daily) you take a dose of the remedy too. For colds that are starting to go down to your chest and turn into a cough or pneumonia Phosphorous 200c is great, especially in combination with Tuberculinum 30c, but you will need a homeopath to prescribe the latter for you as it is not available on shop counters.

You can avoid having to take anti-biotics by taking these two remedies as your cold starts to make its way to your chest, and they will more often than not completely clear this up for you. If you are running a temperature the best homeopathic remedies to take to support your immune system and help your body to reach the temperature it needs to in order to burn off the bacteria (which is why you are running a temperature) are Aconite and Belladonna.

Gelsemium is also great if you are doing the heavy-eyelid, shivering but hot outside symptoms mentioned earlier. An Aconite fever comes on suddenly and is usually accompanied with anxiety and great thirst. A Belladonna fever also comes on suddenly but you are out for the count, listless, thirsty, and maybe delirious. Belladonna is one of the main remedies for both encephalitis and meningitis.

If in doubt, give the remedy at frequent intervals i.e. every 10 minutes until you can get medical assistance. These two fever remedies are a must for families with children, and much more supportive of the immune system that Ibuprofen or Calpol, which work against the body's natural defenses and aim to suppress the fever.

If you are nervous and want to do some reading about how best to treat fevers, or if you would simply like a great book on homeopathy for the family I recommend Healthy Child with Homeopathy, by Tricia Allen (available on Amazon.co.uk). The best advice is to see your local homeopath if you feel you are coming down with something, especially if any ailment comes regularly for you, just in case you need extra support.

For example, if your lymphatic system is weakened (did you ever have glandular fever?) then you might just get one cold/flu after the other during the winter months, in which case some lymphatic support in the way of homeopathic treatment and herbs would be best for you. If every time you catch a cold it goes down to your chests and ends up as pneumonia or bronchitis, some lung and chest support would be ideal.
