Allergy and Deodorant – Should I Be Putting This Under My Arms?
By Alex Christie (BA Hons, LCHE, MARH, B.Inst.A.T.)
The connection between allergy and deodorant may be due to the fact that mass marketed antiperspirants typically use some form of aluminum as their active ingredient to stop the process of sweating. Aluminum chlorhydrate emerges as the most likely link between skin allergy and deodorant.
In considering allergy and deodorant use, the main suspect is aluminium, commonly used in anti-perspirants in the form of salts such as aluminium chloride and aluminium chlorohydrate, which work by blocking pores and sweat glands, thereby preventing the vital and natural function of perspiration. Due to their relatively small molecular size, these compounds can readily penetrate the skin and enter the blood stream, thereby increasing aluminium levels in the body. High levels of aluminium have been linked to Breast Cancer, Alzheimer’s and other central nervous system disorders.
There are fears that synthetic aluminum chemicals such as aluminum chlorhydrate and aluminum zicarnium have contributed to the rising incidence not only of allergy and deodorant, but also of breast cancer in women. The pores under the arm are designed to do some heavy toxic elimination. It is one of the most important ways the body flushes out toxins. Therefore, to use synthesized chemicals to keep the body from sweating is the antithesis of what many would consider a healthy body to be all about. In addition, these aluminum compounds are broken down into such a small level that there is a danger that they will be taken into the body.
Furthermore, in considering allergy and deodorant we must consider parabens – a group of preservatives commonly used in personal-care products including shampoos, skin creams and deodorants. According to the Women’s Environmental Network (WEN), research indicates that some Parabens are oestrogen mimics which readily penetrate the skin. Traces of Parabens have been found in human breast tumours, and Propyl Paraben has been linked to decreases in male reproductive function and sperm production.
To avoid allergy and deodorant, and indeed all of the above potential health-risks, be sure to only use personal-care products that don’t use ingredients such as parabens, Aluminium and ethanol.
