Are you showing candida symptoms?
By Alex Christie (BA Hons, LCHE, MARH, B.Inst.A.T.)

Candida symptoms can include one or all of the following. The more Candida symptoms you have, the more likely it is you have a yeast infection.

Acne

Bladder Infections

Depression and Mood Swings

Eating Disorders

Female Complaints

Fungal Skin

Fungal Nails

Helicobacter Pylori

Lethargy

Sinusitis

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

Acne

Acne is one of the commonest Candida symptoms and skin problems.  It occurs mostly on the face and, to a lesser extent, on the back, chest, and shoulders.  Acne occurs in two forms: acne vulgaris, affecting the hair follicles and oil-secreting glands of the skin and appearing as blackheads, whiteheads, and inflammation and acne conglobata, a more severe form, with deep cyst formation and subsequent scarring.

Tecracycline and erythromycin are the drugs of choice for acne.  The most common side effect of treatment with antibiotics is overgrowth of Candida and other yeasts in the digestive and genito-urinary tracts.  This can cause typical Candida symptoms including yeast infections of the mouth, intestinal tract, rectum, and/or vagina.  Additional side effects are consistent with other antibiotics and include allergic reactions; nausea, diarrhoea, and vomiting; loss of appetite; and colitis.  In rare instances tetracycline can lead to anaemia and low white blood cell and platelet levels.

Bladder Infections

There is growing concern that antibiotic treatment promotes Candida symptoms in the form of recurrent bladder infections by disturbing the bacterial flora of the vagina as well as promoting the growth of antibiotic-resistant strains of E.Coli.  One of the most important ways in which the body prevents colonisation of bacteria in the bladder is a protective shield of beneficial bacteria that line and protect the external portion of the urethra.  When antibiotics are used, this normal protective shield is usually stripped away or is replaced by less effective organisms.

If you suffer from recurrent bladder infections, or if you have used antibiotics, it is important to re-introduce friendly bacteria into the vagina to avoid Candida symptoms and yeast overgrowth.  Biocare offer vaginal probiotics.  (See Benefits of Probiotics).  You place one in the vagina before going to bed at night for two weeks, while also treating the Candida overgrowth systemically.

Depression and Mood Swings

Candida symptoms can include irritability, extreme mood swings, and even depression.  While I had Candida I found that when I ate wheat and sugar together I felt deeply depressed. Fortunately, I recognised Candida as the cause and knew that if I waited several hours it would wear off.  Many men and women come to me after suffering years of depression, even going on anti-depressants on the recommendation of their GP, only to find that their depression was entirely Candida generated and ceased with Candida treatment.

Eating Disorders

Candida symptoms include uncontrollable over-eating and excessive drinking. Many women and men have wrongly been diagnosed as having eating or drinking disorders and find themselves being directed to psychotherapists and emotional counsellors.  They themselves often believe that their food cravings and inability to control their eating, especially when consuming sugar-rich foods, may be caused by emotional problems, since they have so little control over their eating behaviour.  Such people may find their self-confidence plummeting as they struggle unsuccessfully to get their eating under control and lose the weight they are gaining.

Food cravings and the inability to stop after just one helping of ice-cream, one piece of cake, or a couple of glasses of wine, are all typical Candida symptoms.  The yeast within our body causes us to crave the foods it requires to proliferate, rather than the foods our body most needs.  Candida often affects both the liver and the thyroid, and the metabolic rate of Candida sufferers can lower, making weight-loss harder.  Once patients start Candida treatment they find, to their relief, that the cravings die away, and the excess weight starts to fall off easily when integrated with an exercise programme.

Female Complaints

There is a hormone / Candida connection.  Often Candida symptoms flare up before or during menstruation. Possibly because after the hormones have been used by your body they are removed from the blood and excreted by the liver.  If the liver is not functioning at 100% (which it is not when you have Candida), then these hormones and toxins remain in the blood and a hormone imbalance results.

Endometriosis
Endometriosis is one of the more serious Candida symptoms and often the tip of the iceberg for a whole range of health problems that are related to hormonal / immune dysfunction.  The traditional symptoms are chronic pelvic pain, infertility, pain with sex, and gastrointestinal problems. Women suffering from endometriosis often also have systemic Candida.  In the 1995 meeting of the Endometriosis Association a favourable response was reported to many of their endometriosis patients after undergoing Candida treatment. Homeopathy can successfully treat and eradicate endometriosis, avoiding the need to take hormone treatment, such as the Pill.

Pre-Menstrual Syndrome
Candida symptoms manifest as headaches, fatigue, breast tenderness, mood swings, depression, painful periods, food cravings, water retention and weight gain.  Women find these symptoms fall away during Candida treatment.

Recurrent vaginal yeast infections(thrush)
Recurring vaginal yeast infection or thrush is one of the systemic Candida symptoms.  Not all women who have systemic Candida have vaginal symptoms.  However, most women who suffer from recurring vaginal Candida have systemic Candida.  Once this is treated systemically the vaginal Candida ceases.

Vulvodynia
Chronic vulvular discomfort characterised by burning, stinging, irritation or rawness is a Candida symptom and will be relieved by Candida treatment.

Fungal Skin

Candida can cause every skin rash imaginable, from small red marks, to large circular discolouration. Often the skin itches, sometimes unbearably so. Fungal skin is often misdiagnosed as eczema, dermatitis, hives, or psoriasis. With Candida treatment the skin symptoms disappear.

top

Fungal Nails

A typical systemic Candida symptom is discolouration of one or more finger or toe nails. These are treated as part of systemic Candida.

top

Helicobacter Pylori

30 - 40 % of the middle-aged population in the developed world are infected with these bacteria, which causes Candida symptoms of abdominal discomfort and digestive problems. Helicobacter infection can delay the normal emptying of the stomach after a meal, leading to ‘reflux’ of acid upwards into the oesophagus.

There is also evidence that it is linked with dyspepsia, which includes stomach and chest pain that is relieved by eating, only to reoccur at night when the stomach is empty. Helicobacter is present in a significant number of patients suffering from yeast infections, even when their Helicobacter has been treated with orthodox medicines.  It is essential that the bacteria be eradicated if treatment is to be effective.  Helicobacter is often present in people who have repeatedly taken antibiotics.

top

Lethargy

One of the worst Candida symptoms is the lethargy or constant tiredness. Your energy crashes after certain meals. However long you sleep you are still exhausted.

By reducing on certain foods and treating systemic Candida your energy levels will soon return to normal.

top

Sinusitis

Sinusitis may be one of the most overlooked of the Candida symptoms. Fungus may be the cause of almost all cases of the most frequently reported chronic disease in the United States, namely, sinusitis, instead of only a few as previously thought.

The Mayo Clinic research team looked at 210 patients with sinusitis and discovered fungi (over 40 different kinds) in the nasal passages of nearly every person suffering from chronic sinusitis.

top

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

Candida symptoms include sore throats and bronchitis. Although neither of these require antibiotics, most doctors prescribe them for these conditions.  Despite substantial data showing no clinical benefit from antibiotics in treating acute bronchitis, these are still prescribed by many doctors.

The risks include yeast infections, disruption of normal gut microflora, and the possibility of developing antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.
