Cat and Dog allergies – Don’t Get Rid of Your Pets!
By Alex Christie (BA Hons, LCHE, MARH, B.Inst.A.T.)
It is not the cat or dog hair itself that causes the cat or dog allergies, but the old skin cells (dander) that are constantly being shed. The allergen gets carried through the air on very small, invisible particles. It then lands on the lining of the eyes and nose. It may also be inhaled directly into the lungs, which causes the allergic reaction. Cat or dog allergies, or indeed any pet allergy can be the most distressing of allergies.
Cat and Dog allergies Symptoms
A major problem for those genetically predisposed to allergies and suffering from cat or dog allergies occurs when cat or dog dander becomes airborne. Inhaling animal dander may cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, watery and itching eyes, runny nose, swollen eyes and throat, itching of the skin or a raised red rash (hives), coughing and constricting of bronchial tubes, making breathing difficult.
You may suffer an allergic reaction to one cat or dog and not another. Long-haired cats and dogs do not necessarily produce more animal dander than short-haired pets. Individual pets produce individual amounts of animal dander. Animal allergy ranges from furry, to feathered and even reptiles.
Cat and Dog allergies Triggers
Touching or being close to an animal, being near someone who has animal dander on their clothes, mohair, cashmere or goat hair products may cause allergic reaction if you suffer from cat or dog allergies.
Cat and Dog allergies – You Don’t Need to Get Rid of Your Pet
There is no need for you to get rid of your pet if you have a cat or dog allergies (or any other pet allergy). Homeopathy can desensitise you to your pet by giving you in homeopathic form, your pet’s hair and dander. Most people find they suffer no further allergic reaction to their pet after between one and five week’s homeopathic treatment. Homeopathy is safe for all ages, so the whole family can take the desensitisation remedies without suffering any harmful side-effects.
