Yeast infection – an unacknowledged epidemic
By Alex Christie (BA Hons, LCHE, MARH, B.Inst.A.T.)

Yeast infection or Candida is an underlying infection in many diseases, but is often not diagnosed, is misdiagnosed, or is disputed to even exist. Many people suffering from yeast infection are being wrongly diagnosed with asthma, eczema, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction), Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), Crohn's Disease, leaky gut syndrome, irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Celiac Disease, chronic sinusitis, chronic cystitis, chronic pancreatitis, adrenal dysfunction, hypothyroidism, and depression, just to name a few.

Often patients may present repeatedly with typical yeast infection symptoms, only to be sent away by their GP and told to address other, unrelated, aspects of their lives. Often they are offered inappropriate treatment such as anti-depressants or steroids.

Candida is a yeast fungus which proliferates in yeast infections and lives in the digestive system of every individual. The widespread use of steroids, antibiotics, the Pill, and HRT, together with the high consumption of sugar-rich foods have all contributed to the growth of intestinal and systemic yeast infections or Candida.

In adults, the most common cause of yeast infection is antibiotics, which wipe out both the bacteria for which they're intended and the "friendly" lactobacilli that normally keep Candida in check. Yeast infection can also occur during pregnancy and as a result of a poor diet or a depressed immune system (as in people with AIDS or on chemotherapy). Smokers, people who wear dentures, and diabetics (the fungus thrives on high glucose levels found in saliva) are also at higher than normal risk of developing oral thrush. (If you wear dentures, remove and clean them daily to reduce your risk of thrush).

The first yeast infections are usually mild in nature and brief in duration. They may even clear up spontaneously, where the immune system is able to cope, and the healthy balance will return to normal. In some people, however, the infections recur with increasing frequency, eventually becoming chronic as the immune system loses its ability to eradicate the yeast infection.

A yeast infection can manage to hide (sometimes for years) in parts of the body where traditional therapies don't always reach, in our joints, for example. Yeast infections thrive on the foods that are a large part of the typical Western diet, which in addition alters intestinal pH unfavourably. Taking antibiotics, steroids, or oral contraceptives can also trigger the change from good Candida to bad.

Stress contributes to its proliferation, as does refined sugar. And because of its adaptability, it is easily transmitted from person to person in a family. Mothers can pass it to their children through breast feeding or through the birth canal, and of course, through intimate contact with their partners.

When our bodies lose their proper immune protection, Candida changes from being a beneficial yeast into a harmful fungus and yeast infection. In its fungal form it develops long root-like structures that are invasive and penetrate the gut wall. Once this happens, the boundary between our intestinal tract and the rest of the circulatory system breaks down, leading to leaky gut syndrome, which allows partially digested proteins to travel into the bloodstream where they act as toxins and cause all sorts of health problems.

Toxins from the yeast infection overload your liver and kidneys and cannot be expelled fast enough. The body tries to expel any excess toxins through the skin, which can cause rashes, itching and even acne. In order to have healthy, functioning liver and kidneys, you must take care of your intestines first. Once your colon is healthy, your liver and kidneys will become cleaner and healthier. Your skin, hair and nails will all improve, and you will be able to enjoy high energy and immunity once again.

Antibiotics

There are situations when antibiotics should be used.  They do save lives.  Yet they are widely used to treat conditions where they do not provide any real benefit or where natural or alternative measures can be used with greater success and safety.  Antibiotics are one of the major causes of Candida or yeast infection.  In order to avoid Candida overgrowth you should take probiotics after every course of antibiotics.  I recommend BioCare Replete intensive probiotic treatment for one week following any antibiotic treatment, followed by BioCare acidophilus daily for at least one month.
